To the Active Transportation Committee,
First, let me say thank you for all this body has done to improve biking and walking in SLO City. There is still so much
more to do though! I live north of Foothill Boulevard and am writing to express my support for 1) placing the Foothill
corridor in the top of the Tier 1 project lists for long-term safety improvements that include protected bike lanes and 2)
use of any available funds for low-cost and quick-build projects to enhance safety infrastructure ASAP along the Foothill
corridor - as opposed to use of short-term or surplus funds for a lengthy study. We urgently need protected bike lanes
along Foothill due to a recent history of fatalities and serious injuries and due to heavy usage by community members
including neighborhood residents, Bishop's Peak and Pacheco students, SLO High students, and Cal Poly/Cuesta
students, faculty, and staff.
I bike to work, my kid bikes to high school and we cannot avoid being on foot or on two wheels at some point in our
commutes on Foothill. People drive extremely fast and they are distracted. In addition, there is constant construction
and often trash cans blocking the unprotected bike lane. An alternate route I sometimes take - Ramona - has no bike
lane, sees heavy traffic and I daily experience impatient drivers as I travel uphill against the wind on Ramona. This is not
a safe alternative and every time I ride Foothill or Ramona I am scared of being injured by a driver.
Thank you,
Shannon Klisch
