Dear Council Members
I’m writing to support the staff recommendation to r emove the natural gas compliance pathway for new buildings.
The City’s commitment to electrify all new buildings is a far-seeing and consequential (not merely symbolic)
action to make public policy an effective tool in addressing the crisis of climate change. The fact that this policy
is so strongly opposed by fossil fuel interests is testimony to that. The fact that the crisis itself is significantly
caused by those interests makes it all the more urgent to resist their efforts.
It is to the credit of City staff that, despite the pressure, they have arrived at this recommendation, and it is to
the credit of the Council along with the SLO Climate Coalition that the policy has been adopted in the first
place.
As with so many other issues of public health and safety, San Luis Obispo has stood in the forefront of rational,
ethical reform and has exerted a disproportionately positive influence, nationally and internationally. By your
action on this item, please continue to maintain that record.
Sincerely,
Steven Marx
