City of San Luis Obispo
Attn: Mayor and City Council
990 Palm Street
San Luis Obispo, CA 93401
Dear Honorable Mayor Stewart and City Council Members:
I write to share our support for additional resources to build a new San Luis Obispo Repertory
Theater (SLO REP). A project like this will enhance downtown San Luis Obispo, bringing meaningful
economic development opportunities and injecting rich culture into the city's identity. In turn, this will
mean more visitors, economic activity, and revenues.
As you know, what attracts people to places to live is increasingly aligned with the very same factors
that make places attractive to visit. This includes the quality of the natural environment, parks and open
spaces; diversity of people; restaurants and nightlife; and arts and culture. These assets shape the
perception and identity of places in people's minds as they consider and evaluate places to live, visit, or
invest.
The experiences that venues like SLO REP provide are essential if our region is to remain
competitive with our peer cities, all of whom boast quality venues like the proposed SLO REP design. We
are encouraged by the investments the city, community partners, and stakeholders have made. Together,
they will prepare us for a vibrant future. We hope you agree that a new theater will reinforce San Luis
Obispo's reputation as a dynamic place to live, work, and visit.
I have enjoyed seeing SLO REP productions and have recommended SLO REP to friends and
colleagues. Live theater is a great way to free the mind and body from the stress of everyday life. And I am
delighted to know that the new design will preserve and enhance the intimacy of the SLO REP experience.
On behalf of the toruism and hospitality community, we strongly encourage you to support SLO REP's
request for a Challenge Grant, which is consistent with your Major City Goals and comes at a time when
downtown SLO is undergoing a profound transformation.
Thank you in advance for your time and consideration.
All the Best,
Chuck Davison, CDME
