Dear Mayor Stewart
and Honorable City Council Members Christianson, Marx, Pease and Shoresman:
We write to you as
enormously from participating in SLO REP’s Academy of Creative Theatre (ACT).
We are delighted to know that you are considering additional support in the form of a
challenge grant to help SLO REP complete its new theatre project.
We were very fortunate SLO REP had room to enroll our children in ACT programs, but we
know dozens of others whose children were turned away only because SLO REP’s capacity
has been maxed out for almost a decade.
enrollment from about 300 a year now to 1,000 students, with room to grow beyond that if
demand warrants.
Here’s why we believe ACT programming is so valuable:
• Children are taught by theatre professionals, something that isn’t easily obtainable in
our local public schools.
• ACT is an authentic “learn by doing” experience. Participants are immersed in acting
and production work that blends theory and practice.
• ACT students produce two plays a year, both of which are funded at the same
level as a typical SLO REP mainstage production. This is an incredible real-world
experience.
enriching their reading, writing, problem-solving and collaboration skills. We also know what
they would say was great about ACT classes – they’re fun!
Also impressive is that SLO REP supporters are so generous that no child has ever been
turned away for lack of means.
