Good afternoon, As the co-chairs of SLO REP’s Capital Campaign, we are pleased to submit the attached CAPITAL CAMPAIGN STEERING COMMITTEE petition letter in support of SLO REP’s Challenge Grant Request (Agenda Item 6a) for consideration at the February 15, 2022 meeting. Please let me know if you have any difficulty opening the attachment. Sincerely, Catherine and Richard Luckett SLO REP Capital Campaign Co-Chairs 1 San Luis Obispo Repertory Theatre Capital Campaign Steering Committee February 9, 2022 Honorable Mayor Stewart and Councilmembers Christianson, Marx, Pease and Shoresman: As members of the San Luis Obispo Repertory Theatre Capital Campaign Steering Committee, we wholeheartedly encourage you to approve SLO REP’s request for a Challenge Grant to help complete the long-envisioned SLO REP/Cultural Arts Parking Structure project. Our committee of SLO REP supporters represents a diverse constituency of community stakeholders – business people, civic leaders, arts professionals and other engaged citizens – who are committed to the vision of bringing a new professional theatre venue to the downtown core. Our belief in the value of the community’s long-envisioned Cultural Corridor, and the important role that a new SLO REP Theatre should play in making that vision a reality, has inspired our work. We are at a pivotal moment in the life of this project. Six months ago, candidly, we were stumped. In September, when this committee learned that the costs of the original design we had been raising money for had soared from about $8 million to $18 million, we feared we might have to abandon the project. • For the City: A new City-owned building funded primarily by private donors that will draw 50,000 theatregoers to the downtown core each year, generating more than $3 million in new revenue to the region annually. • For SLO REP: After 75 years, a permanent, purpose-built downtown venue and the ability to exponentially expand its Academy for Creative Theatre educational programming and DEI outreach over the next several years. • Cultural Corridor, a testament to the community’s vision and forward-thinking priorities, which will serve generations to come. San Luis Obispo Repertory Theatre Capital Campaign Steering Committee downtown theatre. our community’s social, economic and cultural center. For all these reasons, we strongly encourage your approval of the SLO REP grant request. We look forward to welcoming you on opening night!
