February 10, 2022 Honorable Mayor Stewart and Councilmembers Christianson, Marx, Pease and Shoresman: I’m writing in support of SLO REP’s challenge grant request. Promoting tourism, a family-friendly downtown environment in San Luis Obispo, and enhancing educational opportunities are priorities I read about frequently. The SLO Repertory Theater will enhance these goals by:  Drawing county and city residents as well as tourists into downtown SLO to attend performances. This will increase expenditures in local restaurants and hotels, as well as other businesses in the downtown area.  Being located within walking distance to these hospitality-providers, negating additional use of cars.  Children’s arts programs will have an opportunity to flourish, promoting intellectual, artistic and social growth. Public-Private partnerships are frequently given lip service, but this proposal provides nearly three-fourths of the project will be paid for by the private sector to construct the theater complex, but ownership will be retained by the City and available to the community for generations to come. This proposal provides the opportunity to provide artistic education as well as fun social interaction in a safe place for city residents and non-residents of all ages. The new theater complex will draw people to our downtown area for years to come. I can’t wait to attend the first performance! I urge you to approve SLO REP’s challenge grant. Thank you for your consideration. Pauline Nelson San Luis Obispo 1
