Honorable Mayor Stewart and Councilmembers Christianson, Marx, Pease and
Shoresman:
I am writing in support of SLO REP's challenge grant request. I am a supporter of live theatre and proud that San Luis
Obispo has such a good one. A new theatre would greatly add to a vibrant downtown. The City has an unprecedented
opportunity to fulfill a long-held vision to establish a bonafide cultural corridor. It is a modest investment that may yield
a huge return.
This project fulfills the promise of a true public/private partnership.
Nearly three-fourths of the project will be paid for by the private sector. This will construct the theatre complex which
will be owned by the City and available to the community for generations to come.
SLO REP is committed to providing programming and activities that illuminate our shared humanity. Its planned facilities
will provide space for SLO REP and other nonprofits to present multicultural programming that represents diversity,
equity and inclusivity.
A new SLO REP theatre will burnish San Luis Obispo's reputation as an exciting place to live, work and play. And as the
consultants have noted, the new theatre will help SLO remain strong compared to other cities which already feature
attractive performance venues.
The downtown core is undergoing fundamental change. Ensuring that we have a thriving cultural district will help keep
the promise of downtown's transformation. I urge you to approve REP's challenge grant. Thank you for this
consideration.
Sincerely,
Barbara H. George
