Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond. Dear Mayor Stewart and Honorable Council Members: As a SLO property owner and taxpayer, I am pleased to hear that the City of San Luis Obispo has some one- time funds available at the end of this budget cycle. I understand the City plans to pay down pension obligations with some of this money. I know that SLO Repertory Theatre has applied for a grant of nearly $4 million to support construction of a new theater facility. This seems like a great opportunity for the community; for a relatively small cost to taxpayers, the City will get an important and long-needed addition to our cultural scene, one that we can all enjoy and take pride in – and a vast majority of the cost for the project will be borne by donors. To put the SLO Rep grant request into perspective, the City’s list of capital improvement projects for the coming year adds up to about $380 million. The list includes tens of millions of dollars earmarked for street paving, sidewalk repair, water and sewer projects – all of which are necessary to support a good quality of life for the entire community. SLO Rep’s request for $3.9 million is about 1% of the money the City will spend on capital improvement projects. The SLO Rep project will enhance the City’s image in ways that other infrastructure projects, while necessary, cannot. I support SLO Rep’s grant application and hope the City Council will approve it.
