Subject:Budget SLO REP GRANT

Dear City Council Members:
We are writing to support SLO REP’s challenge grant request.
SLO REP is vital to the arts in our community. Over the past 40 years that we have lived in San Luis Obispo, we have
enjoyed many productions at SLO REP. In fact, they have gotten better and better. Guest actors from prominent
theaters across the country enhance and support local actors, providing an invaluable experience to our local stars, and
the audience.
As you well know, one of the major city goals for 2021-23 is “to engage and expand upon its community partnerships”
with additional focus “on the retention of existing businesses, the recovery of arts and culture, the vitality of the
downtown…” This is the time to help the arts recover. Costs have sky-rocketed, supplies are scarce, and our community
is just now feeling safe to engage in activities with indoor venues.
The vitality of downtown goes hand-in-hand with performances at SLO REP. Most of the performances we have
attended are preceded by dinner with friends at one of the many downtown restaurants. We often encounter other
friends who are doing the same thing.
Recently, my granddaughter asked about acting classes. I was excited to tell her about the ACT educational program at
SLO REP, and with your help, that program can expand.
The dream of an arts corridor would make collaboration among arts groups easier, more creative, and more user
friendly. The challenge grant can help that happen.
We are so grateful that the arts thrive in San Luis Obispo. Keep it thriving.
Thank you,
Deb and John Spatafore, 386 Broad St., San Luis Obispo
