Attention Members of the SLO City Council
The City Council will discuss support and grants for the arts in SLO so we hereby put forward our
heartfelt beliefs that the arts are urgent to the well-being & the future of this city. The arts will be our
pillar of strength for drawing and entertaining both visitors and locals. There needs to be much more
to do than shopping and eating. Theater and museum shows get attention of publications like Sunset,
Westways, tour guides, etc. to lure outside dollars to boost the economy. The uniqueness and variety of
the arts and parks will attract and encourage visitors to come and stay longer.
SLO REP Theater, SLOMA, The History Museum and the Children’s Museum will bring fun, ‘brain food’,
and revenue to SLO. Citizens will be drawn downtown to spend time to explore the many offerings along
the Arts Parkway (or whatever hopefully clever name can be applied to the thoroughfare from Mission
to Museum).
This arts corridor expansion’s other important element is the offerings for children, teens and college
students. They get involved in productions at SLO REP, art classes at SLOMA, and learning activities at
the Children’s’ Museum. Let’s make a strong commitment to our youth. Through participation and
viewing programs that draw all ages and races, young people learn to be members of our community.
Theatrical arts offer training in materials, technology, teamwork, and creativity. SLO REP has gone to
extraordinary lengths and expense to prepare for their place in the line-up. We strongly urge that they
be applauded and supported with significant help from the city to build on their initial steps to get
established in the new location, especially in light of the fact that they are being moved out of their
current location for city reasons.
SLO REP has been active and popular for many years demonstrating their local significance. Their
ongoing ever-changing array of opportunities serves residents and visitors. Given their vibrancy and
energy, we, and so many others, are eager to see what every season will bring to the stage.
Please do everything possible to build a future for families and friends in San Luis Obispo by
expanding and enhancing the vitality of the arts. Honor the SLO REP’s $3.9 million request.
Thank you.
