February 13, 2022 Dear Honorable Mayor Stewart and Council Members Christianson, Marx, Pease and Shoresman: We are writing in support of SLO REP’s challenge grant request. The SLO REP’s project would greatly add to downtown’s vibrancy, generating an economic impact of more than three million dollars annually and moreover, create a robust and diverse arts infrastructure to sustain San Luis Obispo’s cultural vitality. It would be a modest investment for creating a thriving arts scene that most relevant US cities already enjoy. Instead of traveling to places like LA or San Francisco for professional theater, families would engage with and support San Luis Obispo’s art scene, thereby increasing city revenue and citizen satisfaction. While raising our three children in San Luis Obispo, we also engaged in the ACT educational programming. We believe the theater projects and competitions they participated in provided them with a strong foundation from which they gained self-confidence and great public speaking skills. These strengths are something that one cannot place a monetary value upon. But, they have helped create solid citizens of the world who aren’t afraid to ask questions and support their beliefs. In fact, our daughter Kaesha Freyaldenhoven, who was immersed with music and theater growing up, returned after college to advocate for the San Luis Obispo County Arts Council. We encourage the Council to please approve SLO REP’s challenge grant. The city has an obligation to ensure our growing town has a thriving cultural district for its community members and an educational arts/theater curriculum for its youth. We would like to thank the council for their kind consideration. With much respect, Misha Shah MD and Stephen Freyaldenhoven MD 1
