Honorable Mayor Stewart and Councilmembers Christianson, Marx, Pease and Shoresman: Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to comment on your upcoming approval of the San Luis Repertory Theater’s grant request related to the theater’s revised plan to separate the main production facility from the theater’s Academy of Creative Theater (ACT). I have been intimately involved in the ACT program as a volunteer and a sponsor, but most importantly, as a parent. Four years ago, my daughter London first graced the ACT Stage and has never looked back (she is now on the building). The confidence and growth that she obtained and continues to obtain through that program is priceless. Theater has taught her to be welcoming and resourceful. Not only is she a wonderful actor, but her theatrical background makes her a leader among her peers. Because of this presence, last June Templeton Middle School asked th that she speak at the 8-grade promotion on a difficult topic involving the accidental death of a classmate. London did so with poise and grace. She owes this to ACT and SLO REP. That said, there is a present downside to the ACT program which relates to the current issues of simultaneously accommodating the theater courses while at the same time running a professional theater. SLO Rep has done it as masterfully as the could given the limited space, but with the grant funds, they will expand the facility to incorporate the additional space and allowing the program to reach out to many more children. With this, I strongly encourage the council to approve SLO Rep’s request for this challenge grant. The benefits of this will truly resonate throughout our community.
