Dear City Council:
My wife and I are writing in support of SLO REP’s challenge grant request. We humbly ask that the Council
approve SLO REP’s request for a challenge grant.
SLO REP’s project would be a huge asset for San Luis Obispo and especially for the downtown area. Vibrant
downtowns around the world all have a thriving arts scene. Towns like Ashland , Or, Cedar City, Ut, Winona,
MN… all saw huge improvements to the quality of life in their downtowns when their councils supported
funds that allowed professional theatres to thrive in their communities.
Conservative projections estimate that the SLO Rep new venue will draw 50,000 patrons downtown each year,
more than 2.5 times SLO REP’s largest annual audience to date. This will be wonderful for the financial success
of the Downtown area, and it will add to SLO’s already high quality of life.
My wife and I support SLO Rep because of their high quality professional shows, the variety in their seasons,
their incredible educational programing for kids and families, the jobs they provide for actors and artists in the
area, and for the community they build. Our only challenge is we often can’t get a ticket to a show because
they are sold out; there are no seats available. SLO Rep is ready for a bigger space that will allow the company
to grow.
SLO REP could be the heart of the San Luis Obispo cultural district. With the City’s grant, there is no question
that SLO REP’s fundraising from private sources will accelerate.
Again, my wife and I ask that you please approve SLO REP’s request for a challenge grant. We have donated in
the past and plan to donate more in the future.
Thank you so much for your time and all you do.
