Dear Active Transportation Committee,
It is good that Item #2 (Higuera Corridor Project), states that this project will include a connection down Madonna Rd.
However, discussion of the intersections of Bridge at Higuera and Madonna at Higuera are not adequate because east
and west bound bicycle routes through these intersections are not addressed.
According to SLO City bike counts the majority of east (and west) bound cyclists in SLO use Bridge Street to continue
east/west on Madonna. The only gap in this low-stress network is through the intersection of Madonna/Higuera to the
Madonna Inn. This report does not address this connection. This report describes protected bike lanes (on both east
and west sides) on the overpass, but it is not possible for a protected eastbound lane to continue to the intersection of
Higuera and Madonna.
A better solution is to continue the Madonna Rd shared-use path (on the east side) to Higuera and create a bike/ped
crossing and signal cycle at this intersection. I have spoken to Caltrans leaders and they are supportive of creating a low-
stress solution.
Kind regards,
Helene Finger
