Subject:Proposed traffic calming measures for Jaycee Drive

Dear Transportation Engineer Jennifer Rice and ATC members,
My family received a letter dated 1/21/2022 regarding “proposal for speed humps and traffic circles on Cerritos
Romauldo Avenue and Jaycee Drive.” It is my understanding that this proposal will be discussed at this week’s ATC
meeting.
We have lived at 332 Jaycee Drive since 2002. My family includes my wife Shannon and children aged 15 and 13 years
old. All four of us predominantly ride our bicycles or walk to work/school/bus stop on weekday mornings when school
traffic is heavy.
We discussed this proposal over dinner one night and we all agreed to offer the suggestion to implement traffic calming
measures, preferably including a stop sign and bulb-outs, at the intersection of Jaycee Drive and Craig Way. For over 20
years, we have seen a high percentage of drivers turn right onto Jaycee from Craig (which I believe may be considered a
blind curve or turn) at an unsafe speed and/or being distracted (often by cellphone use). This intersection sees heavy
traffic due to BP elementary school and sometimes on weekends when there are youth sporting events at the school.
Driver behavior is especially poor when drivers are late getting their kids to school or the sporting events. To compound
the issue, a very high percentage of drivers do not use their turn signal when we are waiting to turn left onto Craig when
we are on our bikes or in our cars.
My understanding from a former neighbor who moved onto this street in the 1950s is that several decades ago there
was a child that got hit by a driver on Jaycee Drive. We should do everything we can to ensure that that never happens
again. In consideration of the high number of children that live on Jaycee and Craig and the schoolchildren that walk or
ride their bikes along this route, please consider this request.
Thanks,
Steve Klisch and family
