If operations have changed due to COVID-19, please disclose briefly here.) Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Luis Obispo County (BBBS SLO) is grateful for the partnership of the City of San Luis Obispo. Your grant has helped us provide our best-practice, proven mentoring program to create long-term, positive benefit to children and youth in San Luis Obispo aged 5 to 18. During the reporting period, July 1, 2021 to December 31, 2021, BBBS SLO supported 37 at-risk children and youth who reside in the city limits, including six new matches, all in the Community-Based Youth Mentoring program. BBBS SLO anticipates reaching our identified goals for the award to serve 35 ongoing matches and 5 new by June 30, 2022. BBBS SLO could not deliver our program without our wonderful volunteers. Adults are recruited from the community and provided specialized training and ongoing support by BBBS SLO staff. All mentors must complete comprehensive background checks. Volunteers make a one-year commitment but most serve much longer, with an average match length of 59 months (longer matches result in higher positive impact). From 2018 to 2020, Youth Outcome Surveys were conducted with program participants and the surveys demonstrated impressive outcomes as follows: 1) 81% raised their academic expectations; 2) 95% improved their grades; and 3) 95% increased trust in their parent or guardian. During that time frame, none of the youth in the BBBS SLO program were involved with juvenile justice. COVID-19 Impact - BBBS SLO has modified our program delivery to meet all health and safety guidelines. When possible, matches continued to meet in person but masks were worn at all times. BBBS SLO relies on event revenue for 30 percent of our budget - the pandemic has greatly reduced this source of income. Statistical Report: (This section should include the number of clients served, their cities of origin, the nature of services provided, as well as any other statistics which are kept by the agency. The total number of clients served also should be broken down by the type of service received.) During the reporting period, July 1, 2021 to December 31, 2021, BBBS SLO served 120 children and youth aged 5 to 18 in the Community Based Youth Mentoring program. Of those, 37 are residents of the City of San Luis Obispo. Community Based Youth Mentoring pairs at-risk youth with an adult mentor. The matches spend six to eight hours a month together enjoying fun activities that also support learning and/or physical activity. Mentors also stay in touch through regular phone calls. For all programs during the same time frame, 220 have been served overall, and of those, 37 reside in the City.
