As a long time renter in SLO, and now an employer, I want to call attention to the work submitted by Krista Jeffries, but
augment it with my personal experiences.
As a college student right up to an employer, I found it incredibly difficult to find adequate housing and homeownership
was never a possibility to me until I moved into unincorporated Los Osos right after the sewers were installed. I gave up
my bicycle commute to the store and the office in favor of a 20-30 minute drive up to four times a day to get my kids to
preschool and conduct business. My business is affected by poor parking availability due to the amount of people
working in the area like me.
I have lost a number of my best employees this year because once they get established, they cannot qualify to buy
homes in SLO and move elsewhere where the salary that I pay myself can give them the quality of life they can't get now
that housing prices have more than doubled from a few years ago while our profits tanked during COVID.
Many of my employees and friends are sharing housing, despite having full time jobs, because, like me, they make
enough to not qualify for aid projects, but definitely not enough to afford even what's being labeled "affordable
housing."
I've sought out having my business buy employer housing but my staff isn't interested in it because they worry about the
implications of their employer controlling that aspect of their lives. It's a choice between barely surviving and going
under if you pay that middle-income bracket, which most of SLO's workforce is.
We need dense middle housing, with walk-and-bikability, and we need it now.
Thank you,
K
