Subject:Dana Street Parking District - 421 still excluded?
This message is from an External Source. Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond.
Dear member of the City Council,
I am writing once again to express the concerns of the residents of 421 Dana street apartments. We recently received a
notice of a hearing to introduce and adopt a resolution to modify our street parking permit district to include
commercial properties. However, it seems like the 421 multi family residence address will continue to be excluded from
it.
If you are willing to modify the current ordinance and include commercial properties I would like to also request that the
16 units of our apartment complex also be allowed to apply and receive ONE parking permit per unit.
Why does this matter? Well, our landlord made appropriate modifications to our parking lot to accommodate one
vehicle for each 1 bedroom unit and 2 vehicles for each 2 bedroom unit in the complex. We were very grateful to him
and he fulfilled the expectation the city council itself laid upon him in one of the previous meetings where we discussed
this matter. However, we completely lost the capacity of having a guest, or a service, attend our residence without
risking a ticket.
My family has been directly affected by this exclusion (as have others who live in the apartment complex). My son's
mother used to be able to visit us and have occasional family dinners at our apartment. We can't anymore because she
can't park close by and she has anxiety about walking on our (very) dark street at night. My wife and I used to walk
downtown to restaurants, movies, etc... but now we have to drive our car, park somewhere where we can pay for
parking, so that a babysitter can take one of our parking spots while she's providing child care for our son. These may
seem like small things, but they're not smaller than the initial reasons that were used to turn Dana street into a permit
parking district (Mission Prep students parking along the street, visiting tourists parking along the street, downtown
employees parking along the street, etc...).
Aside from that, everyday we continue to see plenty of parking spaces not being used by the same residents who
requested the creation of the parking district in the first place.
I also wanted to point out that allowing us to purchase parking permits doesn't mean we are all going to do so, and
neither that we are all going to use those permits at the same time. Yes, in theory there could be a situation in which all
residents decide to use their permits at the same time on the same day but realistically that is very unlikely to happen.

All we ask is that we, the residents of 421 Dana Street, receive the same rights as other residents of our street who own
or also rent properties and that also have parking spots, driveways, and/or garages but are allowed to purchase a street
parking permit. I sincerely believe that If the ordinance can be changed to include commercial properties it can also be
changed to include a multi-family residence with more than 8 units.
Thank you for all your work and for your time considering my request,
Gil Braga
