I am writing to support Agenda Item 6d allowing for a modification to the Dana Street Parking District to allow
for businesses on the street or immediately adjacent to the district boundaries to participate in the district.
The businesses on the street have always been good neighbors. I believe they appreciate the work the residents have
done to create the Dana Street Parking District. Some encouraged and supported in us in the initial process. And I
believe, except for newer businesses, most will remember that prior to the district being created, especially on
weekdays, the street was usually full before 9 am and then till later at night. Like residents, business owners and their
clients or customers only had chancy and unreliable access to a parking spot on the street. Being included in the district
will provide them a reliable workday parking situation that did not exist before.
I’d like to ask, as I always do when discussing our neighborhood and the residential parking district, that, at least until
the Nipomo Parking Structure is completed, we could find a way to include our multi family units of more than 8 in the
district.
And a general parking comment: The charge for a SLO parking citation appears to be behind the times. A quick look at
other SoCal cities show they are charging much more. Just one example: On our street we have observed/overheard
situations where people have agreed that $40 was not a detriment to illegal parking.
Thank you to Gaven Hussey and Parking Services for their continued work with the Dana Street Parking District. A
special thanks to Alex Fuchs, Parking Services Supervisor, who has worked with Dana Street Neighbors since the
beginning of the parking district process, and for his patience and time spent on fine tuning the district.
And a huge amount of appreciation for the parking enforcement officers. They are unsung city heroes. I believe their job
maybe difficult at times, but over this past year I have seen them be fantastic educators (new parking system),
information and direction providers, and just pleasant and nice people to wave and say hello to. The parking
enforcement officers are ambassadors for SLO city to the public and they do an incredible job!
