Hello-
This email is pertaining to this Thursday’s Active Transportation meeting, so please pass it along to the appropriate
parties. My name is Andrew Kean, I am a resident of SLO, and both of my children attend Hawthorne Elementary. I am
STRONGLY requesting a pedestrian hybrid beacon for crossing South St. at King. My family and I cross there frequently to
get to Meadow Park, and it is honestly a scary process. Cars simply don’t stop, even if you have made it to the middle
island. Enhancing the cross walk with better stripes and warning lights (but no red light for cars like a hybrid beacon) is
not enough to make this safe for children and adults. I have spoken to City staff about crosswalks, and most
transportation-related staff have told me that crosswalks can make a crossing less safe as pedestrians may overestimate
the safety they provide.
I obviously do not understand all of the details, but I sometimes notice that elementary schools in wealthier parts of
town getter better treatment than the neighborhood around Hawthorne. I understand that a hybrid beacon is proposed
to help students get to and from Sinsheimer Elementary. I am asking here for the same for the students of Hawthorne,
many of whom walk to/from school without parents because their economic situation does not allow parents the luxury
of taking time off of work. Thank you for your consideration of this request.
