Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond. Dear members of the Active Transportation Committee, As parents of a 5th grader and a 1st grader at Hawthorne Elementary, and a resident on Mitchell Drive, we strongly ask that you consider the installation of a full light or at least a pedestrian beacon at the intersection of South Street and King. A simple crosswalk is not enough. Families and children cross at this point frequently to access Hawthorne elementary from the neighborhoods south of South St., and to access Meadow Park and South Hills from the neighborhoods to the north of South St. We do NOT allow our kids to walk to school due to the lack of safe crossings across South Street. We personally have observed several close calls at South St. and King. Here are several reasons why a light should be installed: 1. To increase the safety of children who frequently cross at that location. 2. It would allow families to walk through neighborhoods to reach the school and the parks on either side, rather than walking farther along major roads, and braving the intimidating and busy intersection of South and Broad. 3. To increase the number of families who are comfortable with their children walking to school, thus reducing congestion at drop off and pick up times, and reducing overall vehicle trips. 4. To slow traffic on South Street where vehicles frequently travel well above the speed limit. 5. It would allow cars on King to turn onto South safely. We have concerns about the effectiveness of the new beacon on Broad St. given the confusion it causes for motorists, so we ask that you consider a full light at the South and King Crossing since it will be frequently used by children. However, either would be an improvement over the current situation or a simple lighted crosswalk. 1 Thank you for considering our request and for putting the safety of our children first. Sincerely, Kaila and Terry Hooker 2
