Subject:Hawthorne families need a pedestrian hybrid beacon to safely cross South at King

Good Morning,
I am writing this e-mail as a Hawthorne parent of 5 years, who has witnessed too many times the dangers for
students when crossing the streets needed to get to school. A painted crosswalk and flashing lights on South Street
will not be safe enough for students. Families desperately need a pedestrian hybrid beacon to safely cross. South
Street has a high volume of traffic, traveling at speeds up to 40 miles per hour. I have heard from many families whose
route to school involves crossing South who say they choose to drive instead of bike or walk due to the unsafe crossing
at South Street. This poses an additional danger on the students at Hawthorne because there is a higher number of cars
dropping off/picking up, and there is no parking lot or drive through area at the school. We need families to feel safer
walking/biking to school to reduce the number of cars and increase the level of safety.
Please consider a pedestrian hybrid beacon at South Street. The result will be safer crossing, more families choosing to
walk/bike, and less traffic congestion at the school. My fear has always been that this decision will come only after
something tragic happens, so please take action now to protect our students and families before it's too late.
Thanks for your time,
Jannea Long
