We on Leff Street continue to be concerned about 24/7 lighting
associated with the proposed parking lot immediately above the
railroad and behind our houses. We also continue to be concerned
about the noise and safety considerations regarding the heliport
which is planned to be right across the track from the bedroom
window of our house at 1201 Leff.
At a recent meeting, the CEO said that in the beginning there would
probably be about 5 landings (and 5 takeoffs) from the heliport each
month, most of which would be daytime patient transfers from
other Dignity facilities. In other words, this is for the convenience of
the hospital, not patients. The hospital is less than a 10 minute
ambulance ride from our existing airport so this is NOT a necessity
but a status symbol and convenience for the corporation. Also,
should French become a major Trauma Center at any point, I'm sure
the number of lift‐offs and landings would increase
significantly. Multiple studies have shown that a lot of these
helicopters DO crash, and at least half of all medivac fatalities
occurred during these non‐emergency transfers.
Please look at the attached pictures taken from our bedroom and
porch area. For reference, the proposed heliport would be at the
end of the steel light structure that you can see bridging the railroad
tracks behind our house. You can also see the container building
next to it which might help with perspective.
We cannot imagine why the City would allow this hazard so VERY
close to established homes. Without a doubt it will have a negative
3
impact on the livability and value of our real estate not just because
of the noise, but because of the hazard of an accident in a
residential neighborhood. Did we learn nothing from the
Kobe Bryant tragedy or the not infrequent crashes of medivac‐type
helicopters. This is just awful for us. I have nothing against French
Hospital, but we ordinary folk who will be paying the price for this
luxury through fear and loss of equity in our homes feel as though
French is such a "favored son" of the local honchos that nobody
hears our very reasonable fears.
