SLO City Council,
I would like to discuss the treatment of our houseless neighbors in 40 Prado. On Tuesday, April 12th, 2022, I took an
intake at the 40 Prado Homeless Shelter as a recent homeless in SLO. At first, I felt cared for when I signed up for a bed. I
have requested to come in at 8PM due to a work meeting that same day.
When I came back, the woman working says they gave away my bed due to an expired vaccination certificate for my
dog. I gave them the wrong one and could have easily given them the right one. They had 11 hours to contact me
regarding this since I have a functioning phone and can be contacted through email. However, without contacting me,
they just gave my bed away. It was a cold night and this is how the homeless in 40 prado gets treated. There is a strong
disconnection of the homeless and it’s staff and NEEDS to be improved.
When I have entered 40 Prado it felt prison-like with hours that won’t accommodate basic human lifestyle. Visualize
having to check in at 3PM and inside a building by 6PM. I understand the need to maintain a safe environment in terms
of hours, but I strongly feel that this is a flaw in the system. Imagine not being able to watch the sunset in order to
receive a bed and a roof over your head. This establishment’s purpose is to serve the homeless population in our town
and I believe that it’s current structure contributes to their mental issues issues rather than heal and help them
transition. I would like to add this on the Tuesday agenda for discussion.
Thank you,
MaryAnn
