Hello Mayor Stewart and City Council
My name is Abe Lincoln, and I am a resident of San Luis Obispo.
I would like to applaud the City of SLO for proclaiming April as Sexual Assault Action Month; however, work needs to
carry on every week, month, and year.
I am writing today as a parent of a child who is a SLOCO Roller Derby team member. They are a sanctioned organization
part of the Junior Roller Derby Association of America, and they reserve and use the skating rink at Santa Rosa Park
every Sunday from 1-5 pm.
Unfortunately, they have been experiencing a series of escalating incidents of harassment over the last ten months,
most recently on April 10th. This incident included a verbal threat of Sexual Assault and violence—the girls on this team
who witnessed this range in age from 4-to 17.
While I appreciate that the City has hired a skate ambassador to be present Sunday afternoons, I am concerned that
witnessing and documenting these issues are not enough. We need a plan to prevent these girls from having to
experience this treatment and abuse.
I request that a uniformed officer be present every Sunday afternoon during practice or at least a marked Police Vehicle
present in the parking lot. Santa Rosa park is less than a mile from the SLO PD Station.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
