Subject:Parking rates raise

As a property owner in the downtown area of the City of San Luis Obispo, I strongly urge you to reconsider imposing
higher parking fees in the downtown area.
Commercial businesses in the downtown area are having a very difficult time surviving financially since before the
pandemic began. All you have to do is walk downtown and see all the empty storefronts with for lease signs. It is
almost impossible to lease a building in the area without giving the lessee a huge discount in rent for the foreseeable
future.
As to the need for a new parking structure, I challenge you to visit the current parking lots located in this area--they are
not even half full. If you double rates, they will be empty like all the storefronts downtown.
Before the city raises any parking rates, they need to take a close look at what is available and what is actually used. The
problem of the homeless population in The Mission Plaza area greatly contributes to people/tourists staying away from
the area. Increased parking fees are going to keep more people from parking in the current structures and increasing
parking in residential areas that are not metered.
I realize the City has already expended a considerable amount of money in procuring the property around the proposed
parking structure, but in this current economic situation, it seems like a really huge misuse of public funds to go forward
with this project.
Thank you for considering my viewpoint.
