HomeMy WebLinkAbout05/03/2002 City Hall 50th Anniversary - CA Legislature AssemblyA L I F 0 R N I A LE G I 5 LA T U R E R E S O L U T I O N By the Honorable Abel Maldonado, 33rd Assembly District; and the Honorable Jack O'Connell,l8th Senatorial District; Relative to commending �5anTK, uTs (Ohispo TifijBaff TMUS, The year 2002 marks the fifoieth anniversary of the dedication of San Luis Obispo City Hall, and in recognition thereof, city officials and residents are deserving of heartiest congratulations and commendations; and 31IITrreas, The City of San Luis Obispo serves as the commercial, governmental, and cultural hub of California's Central Coast; and �1erVIS, One of California's oldest communities, it began with the founding of Mission San Luis Obispo de Tolosa in 1772 by Father]unipero Serra as the fifth mission in the California chain of 21 missions; and the mission was named after Saint Louis, a thirteenth century Bishop of Toulouse, France (San Luis Obispo is Spanish for "St. Louis, the Bishop"); and rrVis, San Luis Obispo was first incorporated in 1856 as a General Law City, and became a Charter City in 1876; and MEreas, On May 3,1952, with the United States and the California Bear flags flying proudly on twin flagpoles above, the CityoLuis Obispo dedicated anew city hall for the first time in nearly 75 years before one of the largest gatherings of its local citizenry; and A!4LTM.5, Architect William D. Holdredge expertly designed the blueprint for what is described as Spanish modern, and the construction was achieved under the skillful direction of building contractor, Allen R.
