Dear Mayor and City Council,
A friend and I were just discussing the parking situation last evening as we parked by the Children’s Museum to walk to
dinner. The paper this morning presents even more distressing news than what we had envisioned. It seems like you are
trying your best to keep shoppers and diners away from downtown. To pay $8 on top of a meal out will be the breaking
point for many, maybe most. That’s what it would have cost us for an hour and a half meal. Isn’t there some other
solution besides punishing people who want to avail themselves of enjoying downtown? There are so many times when
I use one of the 3 garages and there are still spaces so do we really need this new structure for a “Cultural Arts” area?
When I moved to SLO 40+ years ago, you could put a penny in the meter and get 6 minutes. Seriously! I know that’s
ancient history but don’t price parking so out of sight that our once again vibrant downtown suffers because of greed.
To the best of my knowledge, Santa Barbara gives the first 75 minutes free at Paseo Nuevo. Are we going to be more
expensive than even Santa Barbara? Please consider those who own businesses in the area. How do they feel?
Maybe the need for the additional parking structure should be rethought.
Sincerely,
Karen Wren Mead
