Dear SLO City Council:
For my first public comment to this group in my 35 years on the Central Coast, I address the issue of the proposed
parking fee increase that you are considering Tuesday night. I write as a resident of San Luis Obispo and as someone
who tries to support the downtown whenever possible.
I am struck initially by the overall insensitivity of the proposal and can't help but wonder if city staff is merely going to
the extreme as a bargaining tool for a more reasonable increase. We are going through an inflationary spiral, businesses
are struggling to regain their footing, and we've already been subjected to paying for evening parking.
This is not the time to DOUBLE parking fees. This should not be the city that turns so callous as to take away the one
hour of free parking we're allowed for short trips. This is the time for creative thinking on the part of staff and council.
And, yes, this is also the time to rethink whether or not we need an additional parking structure. Staff has boasted about
the parking app that allows us to identify any available parking in the downtown--perhaps that's the answer.
I'm not one of those "You'll never see me in downtown again" types--I love the city too much. But this part will happen--
you'll see me more at Del Monte Cafe and Taste than you will at Novo and Big Sky.
I urge the five of you to reject the doubling of parking fees and seek out more reasonable solutions.
Thank you!
