Dear Members of the City Council,
As a resident of the city of San Luis Obispo for the past 45 years, I want to express my STRONG OPPOSITION to the
Parking Rate Increase Proposal that you will be considering on Tuesday. This proposal is the equivalent of a regressive
tax on many of the residents of the city as well as visitors to the city.
The proposed doubling of rates for both street and structure parking downtown will result in fewer people frequenting
downtown businesses. Imagine that a two hour dinner at Novo or Buona Tavola would result in $6.00 to $8.00 parking
fee, that a one hour visit to the Apple store would incur a parking fee of $4.00! This is a recipe for a serious economic
decline for the downtown which already has too many commercial vacancies. I might add that the same reasoning holds
for any attempt to raise parking rates by $1.00 per hour in 2025, which the Council is apparently considering as well.
Finally, if these rate increases are needed to build a new Cultural Arts Parking Structure, then the solution is to delay or
not build the parking structure unless other funds from other sources become available.
Sincerely,
Dan Bertozzi Jr
