I still feel moved to write because I think this is a very poor plan and it will hurt the businesses which are still trying to come out of the pandemic and to compete with the big box stores. I feel what we will see are the walking college students and the neighborhood people. What I feel we will lose are all the people who come to town to enjoy leisurely visits to shop and have meals . I can say without reservation that having looked at the proposed increases I would not come to the downtown area to shop or eat at all if they were to go through. To spend $8.00 for the minimum time I might stay would completely put me off. The alternative 10 hour spot at $30.00 would be just as ridiculous. It would turn into a gift for Amazon. And structure parking at $3.00 an hour (which is what I do if I do have to use my car) would send me to nice restaurants on upper Monterey or the post office at Madonna. Walking downtown, I already see visitors standing at the meters scrambling for more coins and complaining about how much a little time costs here. I hope you will consider the wishes of the locals and the merchants and also think about the positive contribution of the people who love (and spend in) our downtown. A plan like this may well backfire and we will lose more than we will gain.
