Save Our Downtown ______________________________________________________________________________ Seeking to protect and promote the historical character, design, livability and economic success of downtown San Luis Obispo. To: San Luis Obispo City Council Re: June 7, 2022 Council Meeting: Public Hearing Item 6A:“modifying the on-street and surface parking lot hourly rates”,“establishing paid parking in the upper Monterey Street area”,“establishing increased parking rates for the City’s parking structures”, and “approving modifications to the Parking Citation Penalty Schedule”. From: Allan Cooper, Secretary Save Our Downtown Date: June 7, 2022 Honorable Mayor Stewart and Council Members: As of 2:00 P.M. today, I have read through the 134 letters and recordings submitted to you on this topic. So that you need not go through the trouble that I did, I am reporting to you that 101 letters/recordings oppose these rate increase and 33 approve. This means that 3/4’s of the comments you have received are opposed to this proposal. It is telling that among those letters opposing this proposal are downtown store owners, downtown employees, former City Council members and long term residents. There have been many pleas to retain the one hour free parking in the parking garages. There have been requests that you exempt store owners and (usually minimum wage) employees from these fee increases. There have been suggestions that you look elsewhere for revenues to underwrite the expense of this new parking structure. For your sake and in the interests of maintaining our Downtown economic vitality, I urge you to listen to your constituents. Thanks! 1
