Re: 6/7/22 Meeting, Items #6.a, 3&4
I don’t know where to begin. San Luis Obispo has gone from being a charming, relaxing experience to a total nightmare.
I used to enjoy going downtown. From removing parking spaces for (no-longer-needed) parklets and a huge,
unaffordable-for-most hotel, to doubling parking rates to build a costly new parking structure where not enough people
will want to park (at Palm and Nipomo streets), what are the workers to do? Pay $24 for parking for an 8-hour shift? I
don’t think so.
How about a movie and concessions? I’ll spend $6+ for gas to and from Cayucos, $24 for two movie tickets, $15+ for
concessions (where the theater makes most of its profits), and $9 for parking in a structure. That adds up to $54, which
is more than the great majority of people can easily afford. And yes, the doubled parking fee tips the scale on how much
that experience is worth to me (and, I will guess, many families and others).
I do, however, have the options of driving to Atascadero, where I can park at the theater for free, or staying home and
streaming . I also have the option of shopping online instead of buying local. I prefer to support local businesses, but it’s
becoming too expensive—and annoying (trying to dodge parklets and find a space for a quick stop)—to do so.
Remember that many people are living on fixed or limited incomes, or aren’t as mobile as some.
How many more businesses will be forced to shutter as a result of decisions made by the city, including kiosk-style
parking?
I used to love downtown SLO. If this plan is approved, I will avoid it as much as possible. I will shop where it’s less
expensive to park.
Please don’t kill downtown.
Respectfully submitted for your consideration,
