Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond. Hello, I write today as a resident of San Luis Obispo in support of the right to reproductive freedom. I am a woman in San Luis Obispo. I am a college student, a sister, a daughter, and a friend. I deserve to have my future protected, in equity with any man’s. I have experienced countless friends stories of sexual harassment and assault. Protect their right to choose their future and the future of their bodies, not to let someone else permanently alter the trajectory of their lives in a decision that the other person never could have been equally effected by. If you cannot promise us safety, promise us our choice. The women in my life have academic futures ahead of them, careers ahead of them, and plans ahead of them. Protect their right to choose to make a decision that will permanently alter the financial, medical, and familial course of their lives. Promise them their future, as they decide it, not the priority of a future for a hypothetical fetus. A man who engages in intercourse may terminate his parental rights and never see the fetus, or child, or mother again. No one has to know. A woman stripped of her right to choose is forced into 9 months of the loss of autonomy of her body, financial detriment by way of paying for medical care and time off of work, the potential loss of family support from her community, undue stigma, and the derailing of her education. Promise her equality to that man. Promise her agency over her body, her health, and yes, her sexuality in the same way you promise that man. This issue can be argued on a multitude of fronts, but every unbiased source of information leads to the same. Protect the women of San Luis Obispo and their right to choose. While California may be promising as a state to protect us now, the nation as a whole similarly promised us this just a few short days ago. Do not make the same mistake as national legislators who neglected to make a move in the name of avoiding controversial action before it is too late. 1
