Dear Council members,
I would like to provide my support for the resolution on the Right to Reproductive Freedom being consider for passage
at the July 5 Council meeting. I grew up in the State of Connecticut, where not only the right to abortion was denied to
women until the passage of Roe v. Wade, but even the right to obtain birth control protection was illegal until the ruling
in Griswold v. State of Connecticut in 1962. I personally saw the devastating effect the existing anti-abortion and birth
control laws had on women of all ages, but especially on my young teenage group. My mother was active with Planned
Parenthood in helping to achieve the Griswold decision, for which I am very proud. While I recognize that the State of
California provides the needed reproductive rights for women, I grieve for those in other states who will not be so
served by their state laws. I am not sure that the proposed resolution provides any real action to remedy the recent
decision of the Supreme Court, but I am happy to support the City Council’s proposed position..
Sincerely,
Wendy George
