Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond. To the San Luis Obispo City Council: I am an architect and a professor of architecture at Cal Poly. As a professor, it is my joy to teach future architects about sustainable design methods. But teaching principles is not enough; we need cities such as San Luis Obispo to establish firm building performance expectations. I am writing in support of Resolution 11133 (new buildings should be all-electric) and Ordinance 1684 (requiring that mixed-fuel buildings be substantially higher performing than all-electric buildings and requiring solar installations on nonresidential buildings). The Council has already laid the groundwork for these resolutions through the city's Climate Action Plan and with the passage of Resolution 11159 (to achieve carbon neutrality by 2035). A major method of achieving these goals is for all new buildings to be all-electric (as a start; existing buildings can be next). The time is right for this action, as costs for renewable energy technologies (particularly PV) have dropped significantly in the past decade (NREL). While federal action and control may be lagging at the moment on the issue of climate action (due most recently to the Supreme Court decision limiting some of the EPA's power), it is up to local jurisdictions to lead. This is San Luis Obispo's opportunity to demonstrate that leadership; to act in a way that demonstrates concern for the future and not just the present. All new buildings should be all-electric; please support Resolution 11133 and Ordinance 1684. Please: act now for the future.
