I am writing in support of Item #5G for the meeting today, 7/5/2022. I support the resolution to affirm the Right to
Reproductive Freedom in the City of San Luis Obispo.
As a local healthcare provider, I see many patients who have used abortion care services for a variety of reasons. While
their stories and reasons for needing these services may be diverse, the importance of having self-determination and
agency to make these decisions is shared by all.
I also see many patients going through infertility and IVF/assisted reproduction. Restrictions around reproductive
healthcare not only affect those who wish to end a pregnancy, but also threaten those who want a pregnancy more than
anything. Bestowing rights to embryos threatens the ability to perform genetic testing and discard unused or unhealthy
embryos, and could make IVF less safe and even more expensive.
The rollback of reproductive freedoms impacts people of color, those of lower socioeconomic status, and other
marginalized communities disproportionately. I urge the San Luis Obispo City Council to vote in favor of this resolution
to protect the rights of all people on our community to determine their reproductive futures.
