In this proposal, City staff cites the evaluation by the ATC Advisory Body, that, as most of these City Advisory Bodies, agrees with staff recommendations all of the time. Did the evaluation include actual pedestrian peak hour school time demand at this intersection? Did the evaluation include non-school pear hour crossing demands at this intersection? Did the City staff evaluate contributing to SLO Coastal for a safety guard during peak hour school times instead of this multi- million dollar improvements and restriping “road diet” plan along Johnson Avenue? Until recent years, there was a safety guard at this intersection escorting Sinsheimer students across Johnson Ave. Our children and we had no safety concerns sending them to school. When did this supposed concern arise? The only housing density increase in this area 1 is the one at 2410 Johnson that will impact access onto this “road diet” proposal along Johnson Ave, between Bishop & Laurel Lane. Was there a demographic analysis of the number of students and/or Sinsheimer Park destination travelers from above Johnson Ave neighborhoods? Where and why did this crossing guard service disappear? The warning lights accommodate the non-school peak hour crossings adequately. Was there an analysis of accidents at this crossing? Likely, no and none. This whole project is another waste of our City’s budget. Change the paradigm, advise staff to refrain from creating solutions that aren't problems and the most simple solution will be evident. Quit wasting our money on these type of projects. Deny the funding for any further study and the construction bid proposal. Contact SLO Coastal and refund a crossing guard.
