I appreciate his attention to my emails & his informative responses. I would like to emphasize some Johnson Ave. traffic conditions that I do not believe are addressed adequately in the current plan: The last traffic count was done in 2016! Since then we have had an increase in Johnson Ave. traffic caused by the continuing development of Righetti Ranch. Traffic on Johnson Ave. will continue to increase as the Righetti Ranch & the Avila Ranch add housing units. From the south, Johnson Ave. is the most direct corridor for students/ parents driving to/from San Luis H.S. The current enrollment at San Luis H.S. is 1900 +/-. The number is destined to increase as the number of housing units in the southern areas of SLO increases. In addition to the high school, many of the French Hospital employees also use Johnson Ave. going to/from work. The stretch of road between Bishop Ave. & Laurel Lane is app. 3/4 mile without any traffic control. From North to South, the road is all downhill which promotes speeding through the Sydney Ave. intersection. If the Johnson Ave. corridor is reduced to one -lane in both directions, the residential parallel streets (Flora & Augusta) will probably see an increase in traffic as drivers try to avoid slower cars and/or congestion. For these reasons, I think that a more aggressive traffic control plan would be beneficial. Conducting a traffic count in September, after school has resumed, would be a first step. Knowing how many cars travel the Johnson Avenue corridor would help in developing a realistic long-range traffic control plan. Thank you for your consideration of these concerns. µ" JOHNSON AND SYDNEY " CROSSWALK UPGRADES The City of San Luis Obispo is planning to upgrade the pedestrian school crossing at Johnson Avenue and Sydney Street to improve visibility and comfort for pedestrians crossing Johnson Avenue, particularly families walking to Sinsheimer Elementary School. The City has prepared final project designs based on input from the community and Active Transportation Committee aj)d-i sched l d to present the final project for City Council approval Al The final designs will consist of an upgraded beacon sysCem at the Johnson/Sydney crossing and "road diet" restriping of Johnson Avenue between Bishop Street and Laurel Lane to improve safety for all road users.
