RE: Item 6.i
July 17, 2022
To the Honorable Mayor Stewart and City Council Members,
I am writing today as a parent and concerned community member who lives on the
south end of town. Our neighborhood school is Hawthorne Elementary and one of our favorite
parts of attending the neighborhood school is our daily bike rides to school and back. The only
problem with this beloved routine is that nearly daily we have close calls with vehicles that are
speeding along during rush hour and oblivious of the multitude of pedestrians and bikers trying
to get to school. The communities Hawthorne serves are along some of the busiest arteries in
town; South Street, Broad Street, and Higuera.
I am excited to see the city is considering a pedestrian crossing at South and King Streets
on Tuesday, but with the speed of travel on South Street a flashing light is insufficient to protect
our elementary school children. We need a proper pedestrian hybrid beacon that will make this
crossing safe and encourage more of our students and parents to walk and bike to school by
showing that their safety is a priority. The neighborhoods located south of South Street and
west of Broad Street are currently geographically isolated due to lack of safe crossings to access
downtown and other areas to our north and east. Please help create better, safer connectivity
for our schools and neighborhoods.
Thank you for your consideration,
Emily Francis
