Good afternoon Members of Council and City Staff,
I’m writing today as a San LUIS OBISPO resident for the past 8 years, a small business owner and employer, and member
of the SLO Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors and Legislative Action Committee. We are all well aware of the
challenges associated with finding affordable housing in San LUIS OBISPO. Our community needs more housing of all
types for all income ranges. The lack of affordable housing makes it harder to recruit employees, to reduce our reliance
on fossil fuels with the majority of our workforce commuting from other cities and exacerbates parking challenges
particularly in Downtown SLO.
The inclusionary housing ordinance is an opportunity to more efficiently and effectively get housing of all kinds built, not
just secure a fixed number of deed restricted affordable units. The Chamber assembled a task force representing a
group of employers, non-profit, and market rate developers, builders and consultants to spend a significant amount of
time over the past several months to develop thoughtful, detailed input on the City’s proposed IHO updates. While the
staff’s proposed updates have a number of improvements, there are also elements of this ordinance, that if not
amended, will result in a failure to meet the goal of creating more housing of all types, include more affordable housing.
I urge you to carefully consider the recommendations made by the Chamber’s Inclusionary Housing Taskforce. These
recommendations include key elements that would ensure a variety of housing types, sizes and models are able to be
produced so that residents can move along the spectrum of housing as their circumstances change.
Thank you for your consideration and your service to our community.
Kind regards,
Steph Stackhouse
