Dear Council Members and Mayor,
I am writing to you regarding the council meeting Tuesday, July 19, 2022 agenda item 6i.
I ask that you do not approve the installation of an RRFB at the intersection of King and South streets but rather direct
staff to focus on the design and construction of a PHB signal at this intersection as soon as possible. Putting in an RRFB
is not sufficient for the traffic flow and high speed of cars at this intersection. While the posted speed limit here is 35
my personal observation as a driver is that cars are often going faster than the limit. Because South Street is a
connector between 101 and 227 many drivers are not local and have no idea they are so close to a school. Therefore, it
seems a waste of funds to put this in as a temporary measure while pursuing a future PHB.
Currently, my son and I are biking to the High School every day so he can attend the Summer Experience program
there. We utilize the PHB at Woodbridge to cross Broad daily and can see that it effectively stops traffic there to make
crossing safe. I believe a PHB would work in the same way at South and King. I would not feel safe using an RRFB
there. The thought of elementary school children who may not be with a parent using an RRFB here is very
concerning. They deserve a safer option as soon as possible.
Thank you for your time and consideration.
Sincerely,
Susan Burgmans
