Hello, I understand that tonight the City Council will vote to approve pedestrian crossing improvements in the city, and the intersection at South and King Streets will be part of that voting. I would like to express my concern that at the intersection of South Street (a.k.a. Highway 227) and King Street there is an urgent and crucial need for a significant traffic control device such as Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB) similar to the ones on Broad and Foothill. In that South Street (Hwy 227) is a major thoroughfare for both passenger and large delivery vehicles, a properly sized traffic control device in this area is crucial to public safety. A large traffic control device in this area would be more appropriate given the size of the street/highway, the location of the highway (near a school and frequented park), and the high rate of speed of the vehicles traveling on the highway (2019 studies reported 44 MPH). Further, the afternoon sun in that area could potentially outshine any smaller traffic control device. Having a safer, more substantial traffic control device such as a pedestrian hybrid beacon or a traditional four-way traffic signal at the South and King Street Intersection will allow for more of the community to safely access Meadow Park and Hawthorne Elementary School, and further encourage the community to use alternate means of transportation. I also note that the City's Active Transportation Committee has also recommended the use of a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB) for this particular intersection. I am urging the City Council to prioritize installing a Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon (PHB) or traditional traffic control device as soon as possible to the Broad and King Street Intersection to help ensure the safety of our school children and community. Thank you for your consideration, William “Mark” Henderson 2366 Sendero Street 1 San Luis Obispo CA. 93401 805.764.1925 2
