EMILY FRANCIS Age: 41
Occupation: Teacher/Planning Commissioner
Education and Qualifications: When lack of childcare kept me out of the workforce for more
than a year, I knew that more must be done to help working families. Creating solutions for this
community is why I am running for City Council. I spent my career as a social studies teacher
in public schools, focused on the importance of local governance. I am committed to
strengthening community through communication and outreach about the democratic process. I
have been honored to serve San Luis Obispo in my capacity as a Planning Commissioner, as
a Master Gardener and as a Neighborhood Harvest Leader for Glean SLO.
As your City Council Member, I will focus on concrete projects that will improve the quality of
life for all people in SLO. These projects include addressing economic inequality through head
of household jobs and labor agreements, seeking new funding sources for affordable housing
projects, assisting women and families through expansion of childcare, and finally committing
to and accelerating our ambitious climate goals through public transportation improvements.
