Pruning can increase that risk further, so it is best to limit or avoid pruning until drought conditions improve. Mr. Cruce stated that “to keep up with the maintenance of these trees, year-round pruning is required.” Happily, there are trees that can tolerate being pruned during the spring and summer months and they include carrotwood, maple, butternut, walnut, birch, ironwood and blue beech. Presumably some of these trees are included among the 13,000 trees located within the public right-of-way. In Mr. Cruce’s defense, he explained that the tree in the second photo below was struck by a truck. The tree in the first photo below had a major branch failure and this resulted in removing more than 25% of the tree canopy. Thank you!
