To: Planning Commission,
This is in reference to the Planning Commission Meeting on 9/14/2022, agenda item 4.b - Safe
Parking Program.
I'm a member of the San Luis Obispo Railroad Museum and really disappointed about how the Safe
Parking Program (and all the spillover to surrounding areas) has effected the railroad museum and it's
visitors. Even though the program specifically allows camping only from 7pm to 7am, this rule is
abused or ignored and often the campers just move to the north parking area rather than really
leaving. They then leave trash (and worse) all over all of the parking lots and surrounding
landscaping and other areas.
The museum initially tried to live with the situation (thinking it was a temporary program) by
attempting to clean up all the surrounding areas but this seems to have given the city the false
impression that the museum is happy with the results. Nothing could be further from the truth. We
are very disappointed and unhappy with how this has worked out.
Please do NOT approve this application to turn this activity into a permanent program. The program
still needs a lot of work and rethinking before it is ready for full use.
