Item number 4A, 1422 Monterey St. , Review of the 7 proposed removal of 54 trees and replanting of 54 trees
Honorable Chair and Committee Members:
Replanting 54 trees, some of which are magnificent coastal redwoods of considerable girth, cannot ensure equal benefit
to the environment, nor can they be enjoyed as the current network fo trees that already grace the site.
Mr. Allan Cooper has written to you proposing that the ARC could propose a redesign of the development without
undue effort while saving the trees. The zeal to provide affordable housing and commercial space should not eclipse the
longstanding wisdom of the irreplaceable benefit and beauty of the trees on the site. He has furthermore challenged
you to witness the example of enlightened communities in Oregon and Bristol.
In the 1850´s large stands of redwoods were cut and cleared to provide pasture and farms. in 1918 the enlightened Save
the Redwoods League was formed to save one of the world´s great wonders in Humboldt County. Our county is one of
the last to enjoy redwoods, each tree a unique ecosystem in its branches and undergrowth. Surely SLO is sufficiently
informed and politically correct to incorporate the legacy of its trees into its development.
I urge you to reflect upon the consequences of permitting the destruction of the 54 trees when it is clearly
demonstrated that is not necessary. Further, in a period of extreme drought the current trees are stable, while feeble
replacements in planters would need consistent watering.
You are the representatives of our trees in your counsel and authority. May you be their voice and do them justice.
