Dear Tree Committee,
I am writing to express my opposition to the appeal to remove 4 London Plane trees located on Poinsettia Street in front
of the condo with the address of 905 Bluebell for the following reasons:
!. These 4 London Plane trees are 35+ years old and healthy. Many many trees of this species were originally planted in
our neighborhood. They do suffer annually from anthracnose, and in fall the leaf drop can be annoying. However, a
drive through our neighborhood proves the value of these trees for shade, adding to individual and corporate property
value and contributing to a green neighborhood. These 4 trees are particularly healthy.
2. The applicant is not the owner of these trees. They are owned by the Summerhills HOA, and in that sense 50+
owners, and one of the hallmarks of this condo development is the lovely mature trees. The HOA Board has caved to
one owner who wants his rose bushes to not be shaded and has reported minor concrete lifting (which is an HOA repair
responsibility). The HOA has previously been advised that root pruning and barriers are the appropriate option to
removing these particular mature healthy trees.
3. The suggestion of replacing healthy mature trees with 15 gallon Chinese Pistache trees is ridiculous. I totally support
the HOA planting more trees - they have a number of condo lawn areas devoid of trees and they have ignored requests
by members to plant trees in these vacant yards.The reasons owners don't want trees ranges from not liking the view
obstructed, not liking leaf drop, etc. The HOA should be ashamed of itself for mollifying individual owners while not
being good stewards of existing trees and planting new ones where trees were previously removed or diseased.
Besides my firm hope that your committee will deny this appeal, I urge the Tree Committee to work with local HOA
Boards to educate them about the City's goals for growing our urban forest and to reward and encourage their
participation.
