Use caution when deciding to open attachments, click links, or respond. Mayor Stewart and Council Members, As I am sure you are aware, Cal Poly had a succession of fireworks for the Homecoming game on Saturday. This started around 4 pm, and ended around midnight as students also picked it up and used fireworks in the streets. There are reasons why fireworks are seriously limited nowadays, the main one being the possibility of fire due to the dry conditions of the environment. There are others as well, like the disturbance caused to the residents who live close to Cal Poly. You can bet that these residents would never receive the authorization of using fireworks if they wanted to celebrate anything. But the one that concerns me the most is a simple humane one: the terror it causes to our pets and other animals. Believe me, this is not funny. I have two cats who spent from 4 pm to the middle of the night hiding in terror between the two mattresses of my daybed. I am sure they were not the only pets or wildlife who were terrorized because of the need of inconsiderate people to make big booms just because they can. So... they want to enjoy a football game? Fine. They want to scream and have fun during the game? Fine. They even want to use fireworks once at the end of the game or the beginning. Fine. But do they have to disturb an entire city population of humans and animals alike for ten hours in order to have fun? Anyone behaving like this inside the city would be in serious trouble. Why should a supposed INSTITUTION OF LEARNING be allowed to behave like this? I urge you to look into this, and to make sure it does not happen again. Sincerely, Odile Ayral 1
