To: San Luis Obispo City Council,
Big Sky Cafe' switched from polystyrene take out containers over a decade ago
mainly because polystyrene is not recyclable in our area, and we try to maintain a
"green" establishment. Our customers were grateful that we changed to all
biodegradable materials.
At first it was difficult to find products that were biodegradable, sturdy and
attractively designed as -direct substitutes. However, this is certainly not the case any
longer. There are many economical and attractive choices for carry out containers that are
fully recyclable here in San Luis Obispo.
Overall, the options for take out containers that we use now range from 90% to
150% more expensive than simple polystyrene or foam containers would be. This is a
sizable commitment but a meaningful one.
On a personal note, I encourage the restaurants I frequent to change from
polystyrene containers for their carry out. And as a business owner I encourage SLO City
Council to take a leadership role in this issue. San Luis Obispo businesses should be at
the forefront of the greening of our county.
